The unnamed attacker shouted 'Allahu Akbar' before a police car mounted the pavement in Oslo to prevent him from stabbing another victim and a police officer shot him 'several times'

A semi-naked knifeman has been shot dead by police after a rampage through the streets of Norwegian capital Oslo.

Officers deliberately rammed the attacker with a police car in a bid to prevent him from harming more people.

Norwegian police spokesman Torgeir Brenden, said that the man, who was stripped to the waist and was carrying a large knife appeared to be preparing to stab another victim when the police car hit him.

“He was about to attack people on the street when the police came and had it stopped”

“Two people were involved,” he added, “and the police took care of them as best they can”.

The attacker’s name has not been revealed and his motive currently remains a mystery although some bystanders claim they heard him shout “Allahu Akbar” (God is great) during the attack.

Reports on the exact number of victims remain sketchy at this time. Police said only that there was “more than one” victim in the attack which took place around 9am local time in Olso’s Bislett region.

After the police car mounted the pavement, the knifeman turned his attention to the vehicle and managed to open the car door and attack the occupants. A police spokesman confirmed that one officer had been injured but not critically.

A police officer travelling in the front passenger seat then exited the vehicle and drew his gun.

“Several shots” were then fired at the assailant who reportedly died at the scene. “we can imagine that he intended to attack more,” Brenden said.

One eyewitness told the Daily Express: "I woke up when a lady screamed and thought someone was hit, then I saw a man without a top on with a knife running down the street.

"The police were not far behind, and tried to run over him, and they drove quite hard into the wall.

"When the door opened, he almost goes crazy at the policeman in the car, then he started kicking for life. Then I heard shots."

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the same suspect had been convicted in December 2020 for a similar attack in Grunerlokka, Oslo, and was sectioned for compulsory mental health care.

He had reportedly set fire to his own clothes before attempting to stab five people.

The man grew up in Russia’s war-torn southern republic of Chechnya according to local reports, and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

When the suspect appeared in court, mental health experts suggested that he may have been suffering from paranoid schizophrenia or drug-induced psychosis.

At that hearing both the prosecution and the defence agreed he should be sectioned to compulsory mental health care.

A deadly bow and arrow attack in Norway last month left five people dead. The Norwegian security service (PST) described the murder spree as 'an act of terror'.

The suspect, a 37-year-old Danish citizen named Espen Andersen Brathen, had converted to Islam and it's believed that he had been radicalised.

During a press conference PST head Hans Sverre Sjovold said the suspect had been "in and out of the health system for some time".
