Premier League alternative Hall of Fame – headbutts, biting, and mid-match tantrums

Forget the Premier League's official Hall of Fame, Daily Star Sport is commemorating those who have brought some iconic moments to the game that are remembered for all the wrong reasons

Ashley Cole is the latest player to be inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame, joining the likes of Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry and Wayne Rooney.

The 2024 shortlist of nominees includes Sol Campbell, Michael Carrick, Andrew Cole, Jermain Defoe, Cesc Fabregas, Les Ferdinand, Robbie Fowler, Eden Hazard, Gary Neville, Michael Owen, David Silva, John Terry, Yaya Toure, Edwin Van der Sar and Nemanja Vidic.‌

However, we at Daily Star Sport thought we’d make things more interesting than just a list of names, and came up with an alternative Premier League Hall of Fame.

Brown’s men would go on to collect just eight points from the 57 available after that match and secure Premier League survival by one point on the final day.
Dion Dublin headbutts Robbie Savage‌

Back in 2003, Dion Dublin fell victim to the red mist, as he headbutted Robbie Savage in the Second City derby.

Playing for Aston Villa at the time against their fierce rivals Birmingham City, Dublin was dismissed five minutes into the second half, after a late tackle on Savage, before forcefully pushing his head into the Welshman’s face as the two stood up to confront each other.

The encounter was 0-0 at that point but Birmingham went on to win 2-0 and Dublin was forced to publicly apologise for his actions less than 24 hours later.

Eric Cantona ‘kung-fu kicks’ a fan‌

Manchester United were away to Crystal Palace in January 1995 when cult hero Eric Cantona saw red for a foul on Palace’s Richard Shaw.

As the Frenchman was leaving the pitch, he received a barrel of abuse from a Palace fan in the stands, and Cantona clearly thought he went too far with his words.

The United striker flew towards the Palace fan, connected with a bizarre ‘kung-fu kick’ and then followed it up with a punch before being taken away down the tunnel by those on the touchline.

Darren Bent’s beach ball goal

Possibly the strangest goal ever scored in the Premier League and certainly one of the most controversial.

Five minutes into a match between Sunderland and Liverpool, Black Cats striker Darren Bent winded up for an effort towards goal which looked fairly simple for Reds goalkeeper Pepe Reina to claim, but a beach ball had other ideas.

The beach ball, that had ironically been thrown onto the pitch by a Liverpool fan, changed the flight of Bent’s shot, completely dumfounding Reina and sending the actual ball into the back of the net.

Bent wheeled off in celebration as half the Liverpool players complained to referee Mike Jones, while the rest of them stood shellshocked.

Delia Smith’s half-time battle cry

Norwich City were playing out an entertaining game with Manchester City at Carrow Road in 2005 when club director and television personality Delia Smith decided to take a microphone onto the pitch during the half-time break.

After her team surrendered an early two-goal lead and were back level going into the second half, Smith decided the players needed a bit of help from the home crowd.

It was then that an immortal Premier League speech was born, as she said: “A message for the best football supporters in the world: we need a 12th man here. Where are you? Where are you? Let’s be having you! Come on!”

The Canaries went on to lose the match 3-2 in the 90th minute.

Kevin Keegan’s post-match rant

Late into the 1995/96 Premier League season, Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United were in an intense title race with Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United and after one particular match, emotions got the better of the Magpies boss.

Ferguson had accused Leeds United of “cheating” their manager by raising their performance against his side to stop them beating Newcastle to the title, while flailing in the bottom half of the table. He also suggested that the efforts of the Leeds players would drop when they played Newcastle. Keegan took offence to this.

Following the game between his side and Leeds, which they eventually won 1-0, Keegan exploded in the post-match interview. He said: “I’ve kept really quiet but I’ll tell you something – he [Ferguson] went down in my estimations when said that.

“You can tell him now – we’re still fighting for this title and he’s got to go to Middlesbrough and get something. I’ll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them. Love it.”

Manchester United would go on to win the league that year and cement Keegan’s tirade as one of the true iconic moments in English football.

Luis Suarez bites Branislav Ivanovic

Luis Suarez is certainly known by football fans as one of the most controversial players of his generation – mainly for his infamous handball in the World Cup against Ghana, the racism allegations made by Patrice Evra, and for being partial to a dive on the pitch.

But no-one quite foresaw him biting another player while playing for Liverpool during a Premier League match in 2013 – and Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic was the unfortunate victim.

After Ivanovic marshalled the ball away from Suarez who was fighting for the ball, he grabbed the Serbian defender and viciously dug his teeth into his arm.

Although Ivanovic fell to the floor in pain and disbelief with Suarez on top of him, referee Kevin Friend failed to see the incident and allowed the Uruguayan to stay on the pitch – and he went on to score a 97th-minute equaliser for the Reds. However, the FA would take action after the game, handing the Liverpool striker a 10-game ban.

Granit Xhaka goes at his own fans

It was a few weeks into the 2019/20 Premier League season and Arsenal fans were already booing their own player upon getting substituted off the pitch – Granit Xhaka.

The Swiss midfielder was club captain at the time and after being taken off against Crystal Palace, the boos that ensued from the Emirates crowd were all too much for him.

Xhaka began waving his arms and cupping his ear to the home ‘supporters’ and as the boos grew louder, he removed his shirt and carelessly dropped it on the ground before storming down the tunnel. He was later stripped of the Gunners’ captaincy and left out of the squad for the upcoming matches.

Kieran Gibbs sent off for something he didn’t do

In Arsene Wenger’s 1000th game as Arsenal boss, his team found themselves 2-0 down to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with 10 men and a penalty to face from Eden Hazard early on in the match. The reason why they had just conceded a penalty was for a handball that potentially could have prevented a Hazard shot from going in.

It was Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain that committed the act, but… Kieran Gibbs was shown the red card? It was a case of mistaken identity from referee Andre Marriner but Gibbs was still forced to take the hit for his team-mate and leave the field of play.

Emmanuel Adebayor’s celebration vs Arsenal

Has a celebration ever caused as much trouble as this one in a Premier League game before? Probably not.

Will a celebration ever cause as much trouble as this one in a Premier League game again? Probably not.

After leaving Arsenal for Manchester City in 2009, Emmanuel Adebayor scored against them just a few months later. That wouldn’t have gone down well with fans of the Gunners, but what happened next made things a whole lot worse.

The Togo international ran the length of the pitch towards the Arsenal away supporters and slid in front of them, holding his arms out wide, while his new enemies went ballistic. Stewards had to try their utmost to contain the army of Arsenal fans that all shared the same intentions, as Adebayor was swiftly taken away by a team-mate.

If it wasn’t already broken, the striker’s relationship with his former club’s fans was now completely shattered.
