Liverpool icon tells Roy Keane to 'get a life' over Virgil van Dijk arrogance jibe
Roy Keane labelled Virgil van Dijk "arrogant" following Manchester United's 0-0 draw with Liverpool, but an Anfield legend has told the former Red Devils midfielder to "get a life"
Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has told Roy Keane to "get a life" following the ex-Manchester United skipper's criticism of Virgil van Dijk.
Keane hit out at the Dutch defender following United's 0-0 draw with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday after Van Dijk claimed "there was only one team trying to win the game" in his post-match interview. The no-nonsense Irishman said the comments were disrespectful and claimed they were evidence of "arrogance", but Thompson was having none of it.
Speaking to talkSPORT, the 69-year-old insisted Van Dijk was simply voicing his opinion, adding that it was rich to hear Keane criticise someone for being a bit pompous.
"I don't think [Van Dijk] was arrogant, I just think he was giving his opinion, just as Roy gives his opinion," Thompson said. "It wasn't arrogance by any means. I would say it was frustration.
"I feel as though, you've come off that game, you feel you've dominated. Manchester United have had that one chance with [Rasmus] Hojlund, and you just felt those frustrations. Arrogance was not in it. And for Roy Keane to be talking about arrogance in people, come on. Do me a favour. I love Roy, but the way he just kept repeating the word 'arrogance'. I say Roy: just get a life."
Van Dijk took the high road when asked to comment on Keane's accusation. The 32-year-old said: "I like Roy Keane, if he said that then it’s fine. He is Man United throughout and I understand he could react like that but I felt what I said and there is absolutely no arrogance in that.
"Everyone who watched the game probably felt the same. We move on. We had the opportunity and we couldn’t score and that’s the frustrating part."
Sunday's stalemate meant Liverpool missed the chance to go back to the top of the Premier League after being knocked out of first place following Arsenal's win over Brighton. Jurgen Klopp's side had a 34 shots on goal (compared to United's six), and enjoyed 69% possession, but failed to score in a game for the first time since April.
