Liverpool fans fear ‘why bother showing up’ over officials appointed vs Man Utd
Anthony Taylor has been appointed as referee for Liverpool's mammoth clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford in a title-defining fixture
Liverpool fans have been left fuming after Anthony Taylor's appointment as referee for their colossal clash against Manchester United.
The Premier League rivals will duke it out at Old Trafford on Sunday (April 7) afternoon in a rematch of their classic FA Cup quarter-final last month that saw Erik ten Hag's side come out on top in a 4-3 triumph thanks to Amad Diallo's 121st minute winner.
The league leaders will now have the opportunity to exact revenge in a must-win game as they continue their chase for a second title under Jurgen Klopp in what is his last season as Liverpool boss.
Ahead of the game, Reds' fans were given the news that the Manchester-born Taylor will officiate the game which could define their season. It'll be the fifth time this season that the 45-year-old has refereed Liverpool, with Klopp's side winning just one of their previous four fixtures with Taylor in the middle.
While they defeated Newcastle United 4-2 at home on New Year's Day where he awarded Liverpool two penalties, the club could only draw against Chelsea and Brighton before suffering a second loss of the league campaign when they were bested 3-1 at Arsenal.
With the Taylor taking on the role as the man in the middle, John Brooks has been named the VAR for Sunday's game with Richard West his assistant. Liverpool fans made clear their displeasure with the Mancunian's appointment with one X (formerly Twitter) user wrote: "They're just having a laugh now ffs".
Another user took aim at the PGMOL as they said: "What a surprise a Manchester based referee in charge, can the PGMOL make it more obvious there hatred for LFC. We are playing against 14 again" while another joked: "To be fair, Old Trafford is only 15 minutes from his house".
A stunned fourth fan asked: "Genuinely, how is this allowed?". In Jurgen Klopp's tenure, he's suffered 82 defeats in his Liverpool career with a whopping 40 of those losses coming when the referee was Anthony Taylor.
