Police woman who tipped off criminal lovers caught out by snog captured on prison CCTV

An “infatuated” police officer who used to feed information to her criminal lovers has been jailed.
Choni Kenny, 27, formerly of Greater Manchester Police in 2020, was passed a sentence of three years and nine months on Wednesday (April 23). Liverpool Crown Court heard how corrupt cop Kenny, who joined Greater Manchester Police in 2020, had a "casual sexual relationship" with Josh Whelan, described as a "committed criminal", and a "physical but casual" relationship with her former schoolmate Rahim Mottley.
The court was told how Kenny was attracted to both men and may have been "infatuated" with Whelan. She used her position to access databases and pass information to Mottley, 27, and Whelan, 31.
The court heard how Whelan was in possession of 20 different mobile phones while serving time in prison between 2021 and 2023 and their use was funded by Kenny. The pair would communicate with the devices that she paid for and delivered.
Kenny accessed police information and intelligence which she disclosed to Whelan, including a victim statement taken when he was accused of violence against a former partner, the court heard, reports the Manchester Evening News.
During a GMP investigation, Kenny was also caught on prison CCTV visiting Whelan at Forest Bank dressed in her police uniform.
In November 2022, when Whelan was released from a prison sentence, Kenny was seen with him in her BMW and went to a Nando's restaurant with him, before going to work where she searched for details of prisoners released that week.
After Whelan was released, Kenny began a relationship with Mottley, who was under investigation by GMP and had relocated to Spain. Mottley was extradited from Spain in October 2024 to face the courts following his arrest three months earlier by the National Crime Agency.
The court heard that after Mottley's arrest in February 2022, Kenny accessed police systems to gather information about the investigation. She also informed him of an upcoming police firearms raid and vowed to identify the "local informants" before attending a course on managing police informants.
The court learned that Mottley tasked Kenny with keeping him updated on police intelligence, which she did by accessing and sharing confidential information.
An investigation confirmed she had accessed sensitive information on GMP's IT system without a lawful purpose and had communicated with Whelan while he was in prison using the mobile phones she provided.
Mottley was arrested in Spain, where some of his family resided and where Kenny had spent time with him, and was extradited to face proceedings. A GMP spokesperson stated Kenny had been dismissed following a fast-tracked misconduct hearing on April 1.
On Wednesday (April 22), Kenny, who had already been dismissed by the force, pleaded guilty to four counts of misconduct in public office and one count of conspiracy to commit misconduct with Mottley. She was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison.
