Met Office issues UK snow alert as temperatures drop to -4C in Arctic blast this week

The Met Office has warned of a -4C freeze this week as temperatures are set to plummet, with snow expected to hit parts of the UK as a band of low pressure moves northeastwards

The Met Office has issued snow warnings for this week as temperatures are set to nosedive in an Arctic blast.

The thermometer hit a pleasant 14.8C on Monday (November 10) in Cardiff during November's mild opening. But temperatures are now forecast to tumble steadily, with Saturday's (November 15) lows expected to reach just-4C.

This dramatic shift comes as a low pressure system sweeps northeastwards today, delivering widespread rainfall across most areas, particularly Wales and Northwest England.

As the mercury continues its descent, a sprinkling of snow becomes increasingly likely from Thursday onwards across elevated terrain, including Scotland's Cairngorms, sections of Aberdeenshire, and possibly Eryri (Snowdonia) in north Wales later this week.

The Met Office's extended outlook states: "Many central and northern parts of the UK will likely be in a colder but drier regime than of late with overnight frosts, and a few showers near windward coasts in particular which may be wintry on high ground. However, it could remain cloudier, milder and wetter initially across some southern and southwestern areas, with some uncertainty as to how quickly this clears away to the south.

"It is most likely that the bulk of the UK will experience drier and colder conditions into the first part of next week. Later in the period there is increasing uncertainty, but a trend towards more changeable conditions is possible, with some rain or showers in places, and perhaps some hill snow at times in the north. Temperatures overall may return to near-average.",

The weather agency has also hinted at the possibility of snow later in the month, reports the Mirror. Independent weather forecasting company, Netweather, concurs that snow could be on the cards this week.

Jo Farrow, a meteorologist with the group, acknowledged a drop in temperatures - but only to levels typical for this time of year. However, the 10C forecast for Cardiff on Saturday is over 4C cooler than what the city experienced on Monday.

"Something colder with a frost risk in the north and even snow showers for Scottish hills but really it will just pull temperatures to where they should be at this time in November. Southern Britain could hold onto the milder air even into the weekend," Ms Farrow penned.

"There will also be a lot of rain for parts of the UK, mostly for western areas as low pressures rattle in from the Atlantic. A large meander southwards in the jetstream will continue to feed low pressures past western Europe to the UK."

Nearly 40 areas are under weather warnings for rain due to fears of flooding, including across south Wales today. Hull was battered by more than 30mm of rain on Monday, while Cranwell, Lincolnshire, experienced a downpour of 25.4mm in just a few hours.
