Former Premier League referee David Coote has pleaded guilty to making an indecent image of a child.

The 43-year-old appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday morning, having been charged by Nottinghamshire police on August 12 following an investigation.

Coote, who wore a navy suit and black tie, spoke only to confirm his name and enter his plea during the six-minute hearing in front of Judge Nirmal Shant KC.

Coote was granted conditional bail until sentencing on December 11. "You have pleaded guilty to a serious matter," Judge Shant said.

"Whether this means custody or not will be decided when all the information is before the court, which is why I have ordered a pre-sentence report."

Coote denied the charges and was granted conditional bail on September 11, with Nottinghamshire police revealing that the allegation related to a video file that officers had recovered in February.

The force added the charge of making an indecent image related to acts such as downloading, sharing and saving material, while it can also refer to videos.

Coote was sacked by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) last December following their own investigation into his condu

The investigation was initially instigated after a video of derogatory comments he made about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp emerged on social media in November 2024.

The official was suspended by the PGMOL at the time, before he was later suspended by UEFA after another video emerged that allegedly showed Coote snorting a white powder during Euro 2024.

Coote was issued with a ban until June 30, 2026 by UEFA in February of this year.
