Newcastle's new Saudi owners have created the new role of Director of Football at St James’ Park and have turned to former Blackburn and England winger, and current Man City academy director, Jason Wilcox

Former Blackburn and England winger Jason Wilcox is to hold further talks with Newcastle over the newly-created role of Director of Football at St James’ Park.

The Saudi-backed consortium have already discussed the position with ex-Arsenal flyer Marc Overmars, who is currently technical director at Dutch giants Ajax

And Luis Campos, who worked at Lille and Monaco is another name that’s been mentioned by Amanda Staveley and her boardroom colleagues.

But Manchester City Academy director Wilcox is understood to be the frontrunner with Newcastle keen to have a Director of Football appointed and in place before they make a decision on who will succeed Steve Bruce.

A short-list of managerial candidates will be drawn up over the next few days with the new DoF expected to have some input on who comes in early next month.

Wilcox has been at City for several years, initially working with the Under 18s before being appointed Academy Director in 2017.Wilcox is in no hurry to leave the Etihad but has been identified by Newcastle as an individual who ticks the boxes they are looking for as the link man between board and team management.

The 50-year-old, who won three caps for the Three Lions, was a member of Blackburn’s Premier League winning squad in 1995 alongside Toon legend Alan Shearer.

And it will be no surprise if the pair have been in touch since the Newcastle takeover with Shearer tipped to be handed an Ambassadorial role by the new regime.
