EXCLUSIVE: England manager Gareth Southgate will seek assurances about Marcus Rashford after the Manchester United star's controversial jaunt to Belfast

Gareth Southgate will seek assurances about Marcus Rashford's wellbeing before considering him for his next England squad.

Rashford has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons after going on a booze bender in Belfast ahead of Manchester United's FA Cup win at Newport. The 26-year-old called in sick for training last Friday - having been pictured in a nightclub in Belfast the previous evening.

He missed the game in Newport and was hauled before United boss Erik ten Hag on Monday for showdown talks. It's understood Rashford apologised to Ten Hag - before being fined two weeks' wages.

But there are growing concerns about Rashford's lack of discipline, following a string of incidents this season. Rashford landed himself in trouble after being seen out partying in Manchester just hours after United's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City.

He was then dropped from the team for the Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle. He was also disciplined ahead of a league game at Wolves, after turning up late to a team meeting.

His latest indiscretion has set alarm bells ringing with Southgate and his England coaching staff. Southgate will name his latest Three Lions squad next month for friendlies against Brazil and Belgium in March.

But he could now decide to leave out Rashford, if he is not convinced the striker's head is in the right place to be involved in two high-profile fixtures. It will be England's last get together on home soil before heading to Germany for Euro 2024.

And Southgate wants all those involved to be fully focused and have no off-field distractions affecting them. If Southgate does decide to axe Rashford, it will also cast huge doubts on the star's chances of making the final squad for the Euros.

Southgate has a wealth of talent at his disposal in the wide areas, including Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Bukayo Saka, Jarrod Bowen and Raheem Sterling. And Southgate will have to decide if he can trust Rashford to be involved, otherwise he will not take the risk of selecting him.
