Virgil van Dijk signs 'amazing' new Liverpool contract after Mohamed Salah deal
Virgil van Dijk has joined Mohamed Salah in signing a new contract at Liverpool after the Reds captain entered the final months of his previous Anfield deal
Virgil van Dijk has signed a new contract to remain at Liverpool.
Liverpool captain Van Dijk has also committed his future to the Reds following the announcement that Mohamed Salah had also signed a new Anfield deal last week.
The 33-year-old has signed a two-year deal to remain at Anfield after he too entered the final months of his contract. His new deal is reported to have no break or release clause and is expected to be worth £400,000-a-week.
Van Dijk has been heavily linked with a move away from Liverpool in the coming months and was free to talk to clubs as a free agent.
Speaking to the club, Van Dijk said: “I’m very happy, very proud. There are so many emotions obviously that go through my head right now speaking about it.
“It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible. The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing and I’m so happy.”
He added: “It was always Liverpool. That was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan and it was always Liverpool.
“There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family. I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling.”
Van Dijk joined Liverpool in a world-record £75million deal for a defender in 2018 from Southampton. The Dutchman has gone on to become the world's best centre-back and has won all there is to win with the Reds.
The Liverpool captain, who turns 34 this summer, is counting down the days until he lifts the Premier League for a second time with Arne Slot's side needing just six more points to secure the title. Van Dijk will now add to his 314 appearances over the coming years.
Earlier this week, Van Dijk lauded Salah's commitment to Anfield, saying: “I’m obviously very happy for the club, and all of us connected to the club. You can't put it in words how consistent he is.
“Obviously (in terms of) his numbers, but the work rate he's put in over those last eight years at the club is incredible and he can still show it for another few years.”
