England's Euro 2025 defence has got off to a horror start as the Lionesses lost their opening clash to a highly-fancied French squad at the Stadion Letzigrund

If football is to come home this summer, it will have to take the scenic route.

England opened their Euros defence on Saturday evening (5 July) against France at the Stadion Letzigrund - and all seemed well for Sarina Wiegman and co when Alessia Russo broke the deadlock.

However, the Arsenal hotshot's strike was chalked off after a VAR check. And from that moment onwards - it was all France.

In a four-minute blitz Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore turned the evening sky a royal blue as France raced into a two-goal lead.

England were outplayed across the pitch, however, Wiegman stuck to her guns and refused to change the game at half-time.

Instead, she had hoped her team-talk was enough after France's second goal had been allowed to stand despite, what she thought, was a foul of Russo.

Ex-England international Izzy Christiansen said on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Going back to the Maelle Lakrar tackle on Alessia Russo, that's where England feel like there was a foul.

"We've watched it in slow motion on the replay and I think that it's a foul. I think it's really aggressive from Lakrar and I think she takes Russo out before she touches the ball.

"I'm struggling to understand why that hasn't been ruled out."

"Wiegman so slow to make changes as usual," one fan sighed on social media. While a second said: "Wiegman seems hell bent on picking players on historical performances over form..."

"Too many players still on the pitch on past merits, and not in any way impacting the game tonight," a third fumed. And another added: "Wiegman should have left after the last World Cup!"

Kiera Walsh was able to land a late blow to the French, after Wiegman switched to a back three, but it was too little too late.

England were second best across the pitch - and they have some serious work to do before their clash with the Netherlands on Wednesday, which has suddenly become a must-win match.

The Lionesses will then finish off their group campaign against Wales.
