Liverpool sign £116m Florian Wirtz as details of British transfer record revealed
Liverpool have brought down the curtain on the transfer saga of the summer as they have announced the British transfer record signing of German international Florian Wirtz
Liverpool have announced the signing of German superstar Florian Wirtz, shattering the British transfer record with his signing.
Arne Slot has wasted little time this summer in bolstering his side after winning the Premier League, having already welcomed right-back Jeremie Frimpong. The Reds will fork out around £100million up front for 22-year-old attacking midfielder Wirtz, with a further £16m in add-ons.
This transaction marks him as Liverpool's priciest signing ever, surpassing the £75m they paid for captain Virgil van Dijk and the £76m they have paid so far for striker Darwin Nunez. If all the add-on clauses are fulfilled, the German international could potentially become the most expensive signing in British history.
The current British transfer record stands at £107 million, paid by Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez in 2023. However, Chelsea's agreement for Moises Caicedo, also finalised in 2023, could reach £115 million if all add-on clauses are met.
As part of the deal, reports in Germany suggest Liverpool will cough up £8.55m to Wirtz's parents and Wirtz himself will earn a whopping £245,000 a week during his time at Anfield.
That works out to an eye-watering £12.7m-per-year, nearly 12 times what he earns at the BayArena.
He is believed to have signed a five-year deal with the Reds in a statement of intent as the club seeks to build on their emphatic 2024-25 title triumph.
In a statement, Liverpool confirmed the signing of the golden boy of German football, saying the playmaker had "put pen to paper on a long-term contract with the Reds after agreeing personal terms and successfully passing a medical".
And they announced the signing on social media with Wirtz pictured in a Liverpool shirt for the first time.
The star said: "I feel very happy and very proud. Finally it’s done and I was waiting for a long time – finally it’s done and I am really happy.
“I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.
“I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best. I spoke also with some players who played there and they told me that it’s perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”
Wirtz had been tracked by Manchester City and Bayern Munich, but snubbed both in order to move to Liverpool - who have already emerged as the favourites to win the Premier League next season and potentially clinch a record 21st top flight title.
The youngster's rise has been meteoric at the BayArena. He was named the Bundesliga Player of the Season last campaign, having inspired Leverkusen to their first ever Bundesliga title the season beforehand.
"You have to give special players like Flo the possibility to do special things on the pitch," Xabi Alonso gushed when speaking about his star.
Wirtz, who won the European Under-21 Championship with his nation in 2021, has already amassed 29 caps for Germany's senior side, having scored six times for Die Mannschaft.
Widely regarded as one of the best young players in world football, he has registered 57 goals in 197 appearances for Leverkusen.
In a statement issued by the club's website, he added: “I would like to win everything every year! First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work.
“In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious.”
Liverpool's spending this summer is not expected to stop with Wirtz, as the Reds are nearing a deal with Bournemouth to acquire left-back Milos Kerkez in a deal estimated at about £40m.
