Liverpool make £120m Alexander Isak approach to Newcastle and say they want to 'do a deal'
Liverpool have made an approach for Newcastle's Swedish international Alexander Isak and are interested in completing a deal for around £120m
Liverpool have made an approach to sign Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
Arne Slot's side are yet to launch a formal offer for the Swedish striker and are aware that the Magpies are reluctant to sell. However, the Reds have made their intentions known they want to do a deal in the region of £120million, according to The Athletic.
This would be a British transfer record and again signal Liverpool's determination to successfully defend their Premier League crown after equalling bitter rivals Manchester United's record of 20 top flight titles last season.
Liverpool have tracked Isak, 25, across the summer as they look to bolster their forward line. Slot's side have also been linked to Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, but there was no official contact between the two clubs.
Ekitike, 23, now looks destined to move to Newcastle - where he is set to be subject of a club record bid. Eddie Howe had hoped to partner the striker with Isak, who operated up front alone last season.
However, a deal for Ekitike would put Newcastle in a precarious postion when it comes to PSR, and they could be forced to sell Isak to balance the books.
Isak, who has three years left on his current deal, scored 62 goals in 109 appearances for Newcastle after swapping Real Sociedad for the North East in a deal worth in the region of £60m.
Slot's side are without an established option upfront, with Federico Chiesa considered an option and Darwin Nunez seemingly on his way out of the club after bids from Italy and Saudi Arabia.
The Reds have already shattered their transfer record this season, signing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial fee of £100m with a potential £16m due in add-ons.
Liverpool have also welcomed Wirtz's Leverkusen team-mate Jeremie Frimpong as well as Milos Kerkez and three goalkeepers in the form of Giorgi Mamardashvili, Ármin Pécsi and Freddie Woodman.
Slot is not resting on his laurels after claiming the Premier League title last season, readying his side to fight on four fronts this time out.
