Idiot rioter accidentally sets himself on fire after Molotov cocktail disaster in Ballymena
Fireworks and bottles were thrown at police in a second night of Ballymena violence but one idiot's attempt backfired spectacularly and bit him on the backside – literally
A rioter set fire to his own backside in a botched bid to throw petrol bombs at police officers during disorder in Northern Ireland. The balaclava-clad thug can be seen running to the braying mob for help as his grey tracksuit bottoms caught ablaze as cops were pelted with petrol bombs and homes were set alight during a second night of race riots in Ballymena, Co Antrim.
In the brief clip, the yob became engulfed in flames from his own homemade Molotov cocktail before his mates — mostly dressed in all black with face coverings — quickly put them out by patting him down.
Good Morning Britain news reporter Jonathan Swain shared the clip on X, with the caption: "Violence in Ballymena Northern Ireland tonight. Petrol bombs thrown at police - sometimes it backfires."
It came during violent clashes with rioters and police in the town, sparked when a protest over an alleged sexual assault turned violent on Monday night.
Hundreds took part in a march after two teenagers were charged with attempted rape before but masked thugs built barricades and attacked properties.
The protest was organised hours after the boys appeared before Coleraine Magistrates' Court and spoke through an interpreter in Romanian to confirm their names and ages.
Petrol bombs, bricks and fireworks were thrown at police, injuring 15 officers in shocking scenes branded "racist thuggery" by a PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson.
Six homes were attacked, with four damaged by fire, and a number of businesses also had windows and doors smashed.
And on Tuesday, there was a second evening of disorder in the town as crowds gathered in the Clonavon Terrace area, is where violent disorder broke out on Monday night.
Meanwhile, police also attended protests in Newtownabbey, Carrick and north Belfast.
Police, who described the disorder as "racially motivated hate attacks", fired baton rounds and used a water cannon to disperse protesters, who set at least one car on fire and smashed the windows of several houses.
Alliance assembly member Sian Mulholland said a family with three young children had to barricade themselves into their attic and feared they were going to be attacked as they heard people rampage in the downstairs.
Democratic Unionist Party assembly member Paul Frew called for an end to the violence, telling the BBC he feared someone will be killed.
Police said the disorder broke out shortly before 8pm on Tuesday night. Barricades were set on fire and were used by rioters to block roads. Order was restored at about 1am on Wednesday morning.
Extra cops are set to be drafted in from England and Wales to help officers in Northern Ireland if they are needed.
A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of riotous and disorderly behaviour, attempted criminal damage and resisting police. He has since been charged with those offences and is set to appear before Ballymena Magistrates' Court on Thursday, July 3.
