Two buses hit each other on one of Bolivia's notoriously winding roads, leaving 37 people dead including two children, before the driver was found with 'alcohol breath'

A pair of buses have smashed into each other on a highway in southern Bolivia. The crash left at least 37 people dead, including two children, police said.

The grim incident occurred today (March 1), with at least 30 people injured on top of the casualties. "So far we have 37 confirmed deaths," Colonel Wilson Flores told AFK. The crash happened near the city of Uyuni in the department of Potosi.

The accident is the country’s most serious so far this year and happened after the two large vehicles hit each other on a narrow two-way road in the early hours of Saturday.

"There has been a fatal accident, and it has left us with confirmed fatalities already," said Osmar Salvatierra, an official of the municipality of Uyuni, speaking to local press.

One of the buses was on its way to the city of Oruro, the scene this weekend of the Oruro Carnival, one of Latin America’s largest festivals. Police are still investigating exactly what caused the accident, but did say that one of the buses had veered into the opposite lane.

Officials said one of the bus drivers, who survived the accident, had “alcohol breath”.

Bolivia’s notoriously winding mountain roads kill an average of 1,400 people each year in the country of around 12 million inhabitants, according to government data.

It comes after emergency services rushed to Underwood, northwest of Nottingham, in the UK, following an incident in which a school bus veered off the road at roughly 7.30am on Tuesday, February 4.

According to Nottinghamshire Police, there were fortunately no schoolchildren or other passengers on board the "Skills" branded school bus, which is under Nottinghamshire County Council's operation.

The driver was swiftly taken to hospital "with injuries which are not believed to be life-altering or life-threatening," as confirmed by police officials.
