As emergency serivices continue to search for people in need, many on Australia's east coast are coming to terms with the damage to their homes after record floods

Australia has been left reeling by record-breaking floods that killed four and left 50,000 cut off.

Parts of New South Wales, roughly 250 miles north of Sydney, were hit by a deluge caused by what reports claim is a slow-moving area of low pressure.

Locals have anecdotally said the rain is heavier than anything they have seen in their lifetimes.

Now many face the prospect of returning to their homes to assess the damage and deal with the challenges that lie ahead, as emergency services continue to help those in need.

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) said it had been called out to 535 flood rescues in the space of a single day.

The same authority has been cited by international reports as saying some 10,000 properties have been damaged in the flood.

Speaking on Saturday morning, SES Chief Superintendent Paul McQueen said: "I reiterate this is still a dangerous situation where significant impacts to infrastructure and properties are likely to have occurred.

"Unfortunately, it is not possible to let people return to their homes until water further subsides and we're sure they can access their homes and communities safely."

Meanwhile, in a briefing to the press, Deputy Commissioner Damien Johnston said to those returning to their homes: "Floodwaters have contaminants, there can be vermin, snakes... so you need to assess those risks. Electricity can also pose a danger as well”.

In a visit to some of the areas hit by the floods, Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: "Tragically, we're seeing more extreme weather events. They're occurring more frequently and they're more intense.

"Our thoughts are with communities that are cut off...we're here to basically say - very clearly and explicitly - you are not alone."
