Football agents slam Man Utd transfer team as INEOS negotiations leave them 'stunned'

MAC OF THE NET: Manchester United have been left behind by their rivals and the new football operations unit set up by Sir Jim Ratcliffe at Old Trafford has struggled to make an impact

On yer bike, David Brailsford.

After all that’s what you know best about - cycling. Sir Jim Ratcliffe will have to stay at Manchester United as he is financially invested. Yet the INEOS team that were supposed to bring “best in class” to a once great football club are failing miserably.

The sound of staff booing them when they appeared on screen at a showing of Wednesday’s Europa League final for club employees was the proof we’ve known for ages - they’ve made the mood toxic. Sacking staff and now they’ll turn to selling academy graduates to balance the books. Yes, the horror financial outlook is all down to the Glazer family and their horrendous handling of United since they took ownership of the club.

But INEOS are no longer free from blame after an annus horribilis at the club. Brailsford’s skillset at British Cycling was finding the best people with the top expertise in different areas to build a sporting giant.

But he’s far too much in control at Old Trafford of football operations when, quite frankly, he knows little about how the game works. Numerous football agents have been stunned by how United approach certain deals. One source said that the standards of negotiations are much lower than when John Murtough was running them.

Yet who is to blame for that? Jason Wilcox? Omar Berrada? Dan Ashworth warned them about hiring Ruben Amorim in November given his style of football and the make-up of the squad. Even Amorim warned them and only reluctantly took the job then when he was told now or never.

Now they’ve left the reputation of one of Europe’s bright young coaches in tatters. Amorim is far from free from blame. He’s made numerous mistakes and his honesty may be refreshing for us in the media but his weekly hammering of his squad is harsher than what some of United’s biggest critics could come up with.

Yet with United likely to finish 17th this season - because they will lose to Aston Villa tomorrow - and now with no European football, they are at their lowest point since relegation in the 1970s. Rock bottom? They better hope so but there is always further to fall in football.

INEOS need to stop sacking managers, pointing the finger of blame at players and making club staff redundant. They now need to take a long hard look at themselves and the leadership team they promised would return United back to the top.

Erik ten Hag was dismissed after just a few weeks of getting their backing, Ashworth walked away and they have yet to show any particular nous in the transfer market. Leny Yoro is a success and will be a superstar (maybe not at Old Trafford as he won’t hang around for long if they don’t improve) but every club in the world knew how good he is.

INEOS thought they would be clever and unearth superstars for lower transfer fees that others haven’t spotted. No evidence of that yet. Instead they’ve sold badly and bought averagely while the football team fails and the club mood darkens by the day.

The next time the axe falls anywhere at Old Trafford it should be those at the top getting the chop and not those beneath them.
