Jurgen Klopp’s near nine-year reign at Liverpool was recalled in the Reds’ Doubters to Believers documentary, showing the German in his true colours

Jurgen Klopp returned Liverpool to the top of English football in his near nine-year tenure at Anfield.

The German arrived with a big reputation from Borussia Dortmund and his character soon left an imprint greater than any could have imagined.

Klopp left Liverpool last summer after bringing the Premier League to Anfield for the first-time and lifting the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and the Club World Cup as he wrote his name among the greatest bosses in the Reds' history.

In the four-part Amazon Prime Video documentary series: ‘Doubters to Believers Liverpool FC: Klopp’s Era,’ Klopp recalls career-defining moments he had to make during his years at Anfield to bring success back to the fallen giants.

Here, the Daily Star Sport takes a look at key moments from the documentary where Klopp’s true character was shown.

Klopp’s humility

Klopp’s shock departure was announced in November 2023, and his final months at the club were shot by cameras allowed into the AXA Training Centre. And one of those cameras captured one of Klopp’s final messages, where his humility showed.

Despite being one of the most successful and defining Liverpool managers of all time, Klopp admitted he didn’t feel special. "It doesn't feel at all [like I am a Liverpool legend]," Klopp said. "I have and always had to keep - and always did - try to get some distance between the person the people are talking about and me.

"But I don't look in the mirror every morning and think: 'You're a f****** legend!' (laughs).”

Parting message to Slot

When Klopp sat down for his final parting message to the camera, the German spoke directly to Liverpool’s next boss, who was announced to be Arne Slot before the end of the season.

He said: "I'm pretty sure I won't be managing anymore. I left my office for the last time, but the club will be fine. The team is full of really good people, and they'll do well, or even better. Someone new will come in, full of energy, ideas, and excitement, and lead the club into the future. It's great."

Klopp’s words are coming true, sooner than many predicted, with Slot’s Liverpool cantering to the title with champions Manchester City enduring their worst-ever season under Pep Guardiola and an injury-ravaged Arsenal continuously missing chances to put pressure on the Reds.
Klopp’s love for Curtis Jones

Boyhood Liverpool fan Curtis Jones was given his break by Klopp and went on to become a significant part of his squad. But the 24-year-old has arguably found his best form under Slot.

Speaking about Jones in the documentary, Klopp revealed that he was sure that Jones was going to make it at Anfield, he said: “He was never in doubt that he would make it, and I love that so much.

“It’s so different to my personality. I have no idea how I arrived here. He believes he’s in exactly the right place. The man he developed into is wonderful.”

Feeling blue

Liverpool found themselves in a title race in the closing months of the season in Klopp’s final campaign, but those hopes soon unravelled as the Reds dropped points, including a crucial 2-0 bitter defeat to Everton at Goodison Park in Klopp’s last-ever trip across Stanley Park.

Klopp revealed some of his team talks, including telling his players to picture their greatest performance before going out to play. But the German snapped when he was asked what went through his mind before the gutting defeat to Everton.

“Now I have to go back to the f****** Everton game that I tried hard to get out of my mind and tell you what I thought before this f****** game? It was probably all wrong as we played as s*** as we did,” he said.

Klopp’s clash with Lijnders

Jurgen Klopp’s former trusted ally Pep Lijnders was by the German's side during his successes at Anfield but the two's relationship was severely tested as Lijnders attempted to fight for the future of Conor Bradley.

Lijnders revealed he didn’t agree with Klopp’s decision to loan Bradley to Bolton Wanderers for the 2022/23 season, arguing the Northern Irishman was ready to deputise for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“I remember that I really fought, proper fought, for Conor to be our No.2 behind Trent," Lijnders spilled in the doc. "I was really trying to keep him in the club because I believed that he would already be ready at that time.

"The club makes the decision together with Jurgen get him out on loan, and it really, really upset me a lot. There was hard, hard words and it was probably one of the only confrontations I had with Jurgen. He won't remember it anyway but I remember it."

Klopp admitted he doesn’t remember that interaction with Lijnders, who left Anfield alongside the German boss last summer to manage Red Bull Salzburg. Meanwhile, Bradley has continued to forge his Liverpool career, making 23 Premier League appearances so far since his top-flight debut just over 13 months ago.
