Deadline Day is so bad that Paul Merson is left doing F1 analysis on Sky Sports News

With Deadline Day short of big transfers, Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson was called on to analyse Lewis Hamilton's bombshell move from Mercedes to Ferrari

Deadline Day has been such a dud that Sky Sports News resorted to getting Paul Merson to provide F1 analysis.

As usual, the network is all over the final day of the January transfer window. However, in what is traditionally the quieter of the two window, with the bigger clubs reluctant to do business, the biggest deal of the day looks set to be a non-football one.

Lewis Hamilton, an Arsenal fan, is set to shock the sporting world by leaving Mercedes – where he has won six of his seven world titles – to join Ferrari for 2025. After Mercedes employees at the team’s Brackley HQ were informed of the bombshell move this afternoon, an official announcement is expected later today (Thursday).

Kebab-loving Luke Littler took the World Championships by storm. Now the teen sensation is taking his talents around the UK and Europe as he faces the big boys in the Premier League.

Venues will be packed out to see the new darting icon take on the biggest names in the sport - Luke Humphries, Michael van Gerwin, Michael Smith, Rob Cross, Gerwyn Price, Peter Wright and Nathan Aspinall over the next few months.

Our special Premier League preview charts Littler's astronomic rise, turns the spotlight on his rivals for the coveted title, includes an exclusive column from James Wade, interviews with legends of the game, current Premier League players and PDC chairman Eddie Hearn - and it tells you everything you need to know about the tournament.

Such is the gravity of the news that it even crept into Sky’s coverage of Deadline Day, with pundit Merson asked if moving to Ferrari was akin to a footballer transferring to Real Madrid.

The former Arsenal and Aston Villa star wasn’t so sure. He said: “They’re [Ferrari] not the dominant one. It’s a bit like playing for Man United.

“If Man United come for you, one of the biggest clubs in the world, not doing great now, but how do you turn them down? And that’s probably the thing with Ferrari, it’s the name. Everyone wants a Ferrari, don’t they!”

Some viewers found Merson’s detour into the world of motorsport cringe-worthy. One said: “This might be the worst deadline day, they even got Merse talking F1.”

Another quipped: “Bro compared driving for Ferrari to playing for Man Utd haha. The disrespect is wild.” A third pointed out: “Lewis Hamilton’s aura is insane. No other athlete gets mentioned like this on deadline day.”

A fourth added: “I like how they're turning to football terms to try and make sense of all this.”
