Jean-Philippe Mateta was stretchered off receiving oxygen after being attended to by medical crews after suffering a sickening head injury against Millwall

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta was stretchered off after receiving significant medical attention after being kicked in the head by the Millwall goalkeeper in their FA Cup clash.

The Palace striker went down in a pile after Millwall keeper Liam Roberts came rushing out of his goal attempting to clear a bouncing ball at Mateta’s head height.

Roberts’ boot crashed into Mateta’s head, leaving the Frenchman stricken on the floor and requiring urgent medical attention. After a delay of several minutes, Mateta was carried off on a stretcher with oxygen.

Referee Michael Oliver did not initially send Roberts off as play continued for a short while. But VAR intervened and Oliver overturned his decision to show Roberts a straight red card after being sent to the screen.

Fans reacted to the worrying scenes on X, with one user saying: “That tackle was beyond horrific.” A second added: “Shocking challenge, hopefully Mateta is alright.”

A third said: “Never seen a tackle as bad and aggressive as this.” Another sent their best wishes, writing: “Speedy recovery Mateta.” While a fifth slammed: “Referees are so bad in England how did the ref not see that straight red. Mateta almost got his head taken off.”

Palace co-owner and chairman Steve Parish gave an update on Mateta's condition at half-time. He told BBC: “He's got a bad gash behind his ear and a head injury, he’s at the hospital. We hope for the best.”

Eddie Nketiah came on to replace Mateta and saw one of his first touches turn the ball into the back of the net, but the goal was quickly ruled out for handball. Palace’s pressure eventually told as Japhet Tanganga headed a cross into his own net.

Palace then doubled their lead in the 40th minute after another VAR check. Daniel Munoz was initially deemed offside as he latched onto a loose ball to knock the ball home. But replays showed Millwall midfielder Billy Mitchell had cleared the ball into Tanganga, meaning the Colombian was onside.

Millwall did get a lifeline with the final kick of the first-half as Wes Harding's shot was deflected past Matt Turner to half the deficit heading into the break. However, a late Eddie Nketiah goal ended any comeback hopes as the Eagles booked their spot in the quarter-finals with a 3-1 win.

The seriousness of Mateta’s injury is unclear. Palace will be hoping their striker is able to return as soon as possible with the 27-year-old scoring eight goals in his last eight Premier League games.
