Arsenal transfer news:
Viktor Gyokeres transfer blow as title winners join race
Viktor Gyokeres has been linked with a move to the Premier League this summer with interest from Arsenal - but the Gunners' hopes of landing the striker have taken a hit
Italian title holders Napoli are set to go head-to-head with Arsenal for the signature of Sporting Lisbon's £67million-rated striker Viktor Gyokeres. Manager Antonio Conte has urged the club to swoop in for the 26-year-old ex-Brighton, Swansea and Coventry forward, who has emerged as one of Europe's top goal scorers.
Conte holds a strong hand after guiding Napoli to the Serie A crown and subsequently rejecting an offer from Juventus for his services. He envisions Gyokeres spearheading his attack in the Champions League next season.
Napoli could capitalise on Arsenal's hesitation over whether to chase the Swedish International or RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko.
The Gunners are finally prepared to equip manager Mikel Arteta with a proven goal scorer after finishing runners-up in the Premier League for three consecutive seasons.
With rumours suggesting that the London club are favouring Slovakian forward Sesko, this could pave the way for other clubs to make a move for Gyokeres, reports the Mirror.
Sporting have made it clear this week that they won't settle for anything less than their £67million valuation for a player who netted an astonishing 57 goals in 49 matches this season for both club and country.
Conte already has Romelu Lukaku as a quality striking option in Naples. The former Chelsea star scored 14 times in the Italian top division and was their leading scorer, but the Belgian could use more competition up front.
Manchester United's boss Ruben Amorim is a massive fan of Gyokeres, having worked with him in Portugal.
United would need to offload some players first to raise the funds - hence why the whopping £100million interest from the Saudi Pro League for Bruno Fernandes is appealing to many at Old Trafford.
A United legend has already encouraged his former club to pocket the cash if they get an offer in that ballpark, knowing it could bolster the Red Devils' squad amidst their financial constraints.
The club are itching for more attacking options after witnessing Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund net only seven Premier League goals between them this season.
United had their sights set on Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap this summer, but he has snubbed them in favour of joining Chelsea.
