Alexander Isak is reportedly unhappy at Newcastle United after Liverpool approached the Magpies regarding a British transfer record offer, amid the Swede's contract standoff

Alexander Isak is reportedly 'unhappy' at Newcastle United amid doubts over his future at the club and the denial of a dream move to Liverpool.

The Merseyside giants made an approach to the Magpies about a potential British record £120million deal, but the Newcastle board are standing firm in their support of Eddie Howe by retaining the Swedish forward and blocking any move to the Premier League champions.

Since his £63m transfer from Real Sociedad in January 2023, Isak has improved season by season. He netted 10 goals in his debut half-season and has since exceeded the 20-goal mark in consecutive Premier League seasons, finishing only behind the Reds' own top-scorer Mohamed Salah in last season's goal tally, and fired the Toon to League Cup glory over Liverpool at Wembley.

Virtually every top European club would be thrilled to sign Isak, but so far, only Liverpool have shown serious interest, making a stunning swoop for Isak after already breaking the British transfer record once this summer when they signed Florian Wirtz for £116m from Bayer Leverkusen.

However, their approach about a possible blockbuster deal was promptly rebuffed, with the Toon refusing to sell at any cost. The Anfield chiefs have swiftly shifted their focus to Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, 23, having edged out Newcastle in the race for the £75m-rated French player.

While Isak isn't expected to push for a move away from the north-east, he is reportedly 'upset' about his contract situation. The 25-year-old is contracted for another three years, but a revised and enhanced deal could help deter any distractions.

According to the Daily Express, contract negotiations have hit a stalemate, with 'no progress' towards agreeing on an extension. Last year, Isak's representatives were 'promised' an increase on his £130,000-a-week wage.

And while the Magpies are prepared to make Isak their top earner with a weekly wage exceeding £200,000, there's still uncertainty over whether he'll commit his future to the club for the long haul.

Newcastle had to switch to their backup plan after pulling out of negotiations for Ekitike. They've shown interest in Yoane Wissa, but that move might be scuppered as Manchester United are closing in on signing Bryan Mbeumo, and Brentford are unlikely to let two key forwards depart in the same transfer window.

Anthony Elanga stands as Newcastle's sole major signing this summer, despite manager Howe's insistence on swift action in the transfer market.

Howe said: "We have to be dynamic. We have to be ready to conclude things quickly because good players don't hang around for long. That's always been my thought and my message on recruitment."
